Cleveland Clinic puts it first: essential tremor is worst when you use the hand and lessens at rest, while Parkinson's tremor is worst at rest and lessens in use. That observation is a starting point for the appointment, not a diagnosis.</div></details><details><summary>Is essential tremor dangerous?</summary><div class="acv-a">Cleveland Clinic says the tremor itself is not dangerous, but it can become severe enough to disrupt eating, drinking, dressing and writing. It is usually progressive, worsening slowly over years.</div></details><details><summary>Will my children get it?</summary><div class="acv-a">Cleveland Clinic says about half of all essential tremor cases are inherited, and that it appears to be autosomal dominant, meaning a parent who carries the gene passes about a 50 percent chance of inheriting it.</div></details><details><summary>Does caffeine really make it worse?</summary><div class="acv-a">Mayo Clinic lists caffeine alongside emotional stress, fatigue and extreme temperatures as things that may worsen essential tremor. Cleveland Clinic makes the same point about anxiety, fatigue and stress.</div></details><details><summary>At what age does each one usually start?</summary><div class="acv-a">Cleveland Clinic says essential tremor is most likely to start between ages 10 and 19 or between 50 and 59, and affects about 5 percent of people over 60. NIA says most people first develop Parkinson's after age 60.</div></details><details><summary>What should I ask at the appointment?</summary><div class="acv-a">Ask whether your tremor is an action tremor or a rest tremor, whether anything besides tremor showed up on the exam, which blood or imaging tests are being used to rule other causes out, and what would change the answer.</div></details></div><div class="acv-secondary">Wondering where you stand overall? <a href="/#assessment">Take the free 5-minute Healthspan Snapshot</a> and see your strongest and weakest of six dimensions.</div></div></div>
