Cleveland Clinic adds that many people do not notice they are doing it. The neck tells them first.</li><li><b>Injury.</b> Trauma damages muscles, ligaments, disks, vertebral joints and nerve roots. Whiplash in a car accident is the common one.</li><li><b>Growths.</b> Masses including tumors, cysts and bone spurs press on the nerves in your neck. Cleveland Clinic says to seek urgent medical care if neck pain follows an accident, involves loss of bowel or bladder control, comes with chills, fever or unexplained weight loss, or brings numbness, tingling or weakness in your arms or legs.</p><div class="acv-faq"><h2>Frequently Asked Questions</h2><details><summary>How long should neck pain last before I worry?</summary><div class="acv-a">Cleveland Clinic says neck pain from common issues like strains and stress usually improves within a week or two, though it can take a few months to go entirely. Pain that does not improve after one week is on its own list of reasons to seek urgent care.</div></details><details><summary>Do I need an X-ray or an MRI for neck pain?</summary><div class="acv-a">Usually not. Cleveland Clinic says imaging tests are usually not necessary and that a medical history and physical exam are normally enough to diagnose the cause. Imaging comes in if a provider suspects a serious injury or the pain is severe and not improving.</div></details><details><summary>Can my desk really be causing this?</summary><div class="acv-a">Yes. Cleveland Clinic names straining your neck to view a computer screen for long periods as a common cause, and Mayo Clinic cites a study finding that people who sit still for more than six hours a day are more likely to have neck pain.</div></details><details><summary>Should I use ice or heat on a sore neck?</summary><div class="acv-a">Both, in that order. Cleveland Clinic says to use cold immediately after an injury, fifteen minutes every few hours, because it narrows the blood vessels and reduces swelling, then switch to heat to loosen the muscles and promote blood flow.</div></details><details><summary>Is neck pain more common as I get older?</summary><div class="acv-a">Yes. Cleveland Clinic says the chance of developing it increases with age and that it affects 10 to 20 percent of adults. Mayo Clinic says it is more common after age 40, because neck joints wear down like any other joint.</div></details><details><summary>What exercises actually help my neck?</summary><div class="acv-a">Cleveland Clinic points at the upper back rather than the neck, because losing upper back extensor strength tips the head forward. It names scapular squeezes, standing push ups in a doorframe, and theraband rowing, ten repetitions each.</div></details></div><div class="acv-secondary">Wondering where you stand overall? <a href="/#assessment">Take the free 5-minute Healthspan Snapshot</a> and see your strongest and weakest of six dimensions.</div></div></div>
