<p>Walk the eye-vitamin aisle and every bottle promises to protect your sight. Almost none of those products were ever tested in a real clinical trial. One formula is the exception, and it did not come from a supplement company. It came out of a federal research laboratory.</p>
<p>The <a href="https://www.nei.nih.gov/eye-health-information/clinical-trials/age-related-eye-disease-studies-aredsareds2" target="_blank" rel="noopener">National Eye Institute</a>, part of the NIH, ran two large randomized trials called AREDS and AREDS2. They answer the question almost no supplement can: does it actually work, and for whom. The answer is a clear yes for one specific group and a clear no for everyone else, and that line is the entire story.</p>
<div class="ac-band"><div class="inner"><div class="big">1</div><div><div class="q">What it is</div><h3>A Formula Built Inside a Federal Lab</h3></div></div></div>
<p>AREDS stands for the Age-Related Eye Disease Study. The National Eye Institute enrolled 4,757 people in the first trial and more than 4,000 in AREDS2, then <a href="https://www.nei.nih.gov/eye-health-information/clinical-trials/age-related-eye-disease-studies-aredsareds2/about-areds-and-areds2" target="_blank" rel="noopener">followed them for years</a>. The current formula is high-dose vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc, copper, lutein and zeaxanthin, at levels far above any daily multivitamin.</p>
<figure class="ac-figure"><img src="https://images.pexels.com/photos/17820735/pexels-photo-17820735.jpeg?auto=compress&cs=tinysrgb&w=800&h=300&fit=crop" alt="A supplement bottle surrounded by amber and dark capsules" width="800" height="300" loading="lazy" decoding="async"><figcaption>The AREDS2 formula is a fixed set of vitamins and minerals at trial doses, not a general eye multivitamin.</figcaption></figure>
<div class="ac-band"><div class="inner"><div class="big">2</div><div><div class="q">What it proved</div><h3>It Slows Vision Loss, in One Group</h3></div></div></div>
<p>In the original trial, the formula cut the risk of progressing to advanced AMD by about 25 percent over five years. Among the highest-risk participants, 34 percent taking it reached advanced AMD, compared with 44 percent on placebo. That is a real, measured effect from a placebo-controlled study, which is rare in the supplement world.</p>
<div class="ac-band"><div class="inner"><div class="big">3</div><div><div class="q">The part the label skips</div><h3>It Does Nothing If You Do Not Have AMD</h3></div></div></div>
<p>Here is what the bottles leave off. The National Eye Institute is explicit that there was <a href="https://www.nei.nih.gov/eye-health-information/clinical-trials/age-related-eye-disease-studies-aredsareds2/aredsareds2-frequently-asked-questions" target="_blank" rel="noopener">no benefit for people with early AMD</a> or for people with no AMD at all. It does not prevent macular degeneration, and it had no effect on cataracts. Taking it as insurance for healthy eyes is simply not supported by the trial.</p>
<div class="ac-callout"><div class="n">Nutritional supplements cannot prevent AMD. However, the AREDS and AREDS2 supplements may delay progression of intermediate to advanced AMD and may help you keep your vision longer.</div><div class="d">In plain terms: this is a treatment for a diagnosed condition, not a shield for eyes that are still healthy.</div><div class="c">National Eye Institute</div></div>
<div class="ac-band"><div class="inner"><div class="big">4</div><div><div class="q">Why the formula changed</div><h3>They Removed the Ingredient That Raised Cancer Risk</h3></div></div></div>
<p>The first formula used beta-carotene. Two national cancer trials found beta-carotene raised lung cancer risk in smokers, and in AREDS2 former smokers taking it developed lung cancer at 2 percent versus 0.9 percent without it. The Institute swapped in <a href="https://www.aao.org/eye-health/diseases/vitamins-amd" target="_blank" rel="noopener">lutein and zeaxanthin</a>, which protected as well or better with no cancer signal.</p>
<div class="ac-band"><div class="inner"><div class="big">5</div><div><div class="q">How to use it</div><h3>Food First, Then the Formula If You Qualify</h3></div></div></div>
<p>The lutein and zeaxanthin at the center of the formula are the same pigments in dark leafy greens, and people who eat more of them tend to have lower AMD risk. But the trial doses are far higher than food or a multivitamin can provide. The formula is a targeted tool for diagnosed intermediate AMD, decided with your eye doctor, not a daily habit for everyone.</p>

<div class="ac-faq"><h2>Frequently Asked Questions</h2><details><summary>What is AREDS2?</summary><div class="a">AREDS2 is the formula from the second Age-Related Eye Disease Study, a trial run by the National Eye Institute. It contains high-dose vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc, copper, lutein and zeaxanthin.</div></details><details><summary>Who actually benefits from AREDS2 supplements?</summary><div class="a">In the trials, only people with intermediate AMD, or advanced AMD in one eye, benefited. The National Eye Institute found no benefit for people with early AMD or for people with no AMD.</div></details><details><summary>Does AREDS2 prevent macular degeneration?</summary><div class="a">No. The National Eye Institute states plainly that supplements cannot prevent AMD. What the formula can do is slow progression from intermediate to advanced AMD in people who already have it.</div></details><details><summary>Can a multivitamin or diet give me the same benefit?</summary><div class="a">No. The trial doses are much higher than a multivitamin, and are hard to reach through diet alone. That said, a diet rich in leafy greens is linked to lower AMD risk and is worth prioritizing.</div></details><details><summary>Why was beta-carotene taken out?</summary><div class="a">Beta-carotene raised lung cancer risk in current and former smokers. AREDS2 replaced it with lutein and zeaxanthin, which protected the retina as well or better without that cancer signal.</div></details><details><summary>Is this medical advice?</summary><div class="a">No. This article is educational and is not a substitute for your own eye doctor. Whether AREDS2 is right for you is a decision to make after a dilated eye exam.</div></details></div>
